D. Filipa de Lencastre
Nasceu em Leicester, na Inglaterra, em Março de 1360.
Era uma princesa Inglesa da Casa de Lencastre, filha de João de Gand e de Branca de Lencastre.
Era bastante formosa, tinha pele branca, cabelos louros e os olhos azuis.
Tinha o trato delicado e agradável e era muito religiosa.
Parece ter tido muita influência sobre o marido, o rei D. João I.
Assistiu ao início de um esplêndido reinado e da época mais brilhante da História de Portugal.
Manteve ao seu serviço alguns súbditos Ingleses de grande valor na corte Portuguesa, onde, com o seu exemplo, contribuiu para o polimento da linguagem e maneiras.
A ela se deve a reconstrução do Palácio de Sintra, entre outros, e da belíssima varanda do Paço do castelo de Leiria.
Atacada pela Peste entregou aos três filhos mais velhos três espadas com uma mensagem:
- A D. Duarte, herdeiro do trono - "reinar com justiça".
- A D. Pedro - "amparar os fracos".
- A D. Henrique - "proteger os pobres".
Morreu em 19 de Julho de 1415, antes da partida da expedição a Ceuta.
Está sepultada no mesmo túmulo de D. João I, na Capela do Fundador do Mosteiro da Batalha, o primeiro Panteão Real de Portugal.
Philippa of Lancaster
She was born in Leicester, England, in March 1360.
She was an English princess of the House of Lancaster, daughter of John of Gaunt and Blanche of Lancaster.
She was quite beautiful, had white skin, blond hair and blue eyes.
She was polite and pleasant and very religious.
She seems to have had a lot of influence on her husband, king John I.
She witnessed the beginning of a splendid reign and the most brilliant time in the History of Portugal.
She kept in her service some English subjects of great worth at the Portuguese Court, where, by her example, she contributed to the polishing of language and manners.
It is due to her the reconstruction of the Palace of Sintra, among others, and the beautiful balcony of the Palace of the castle of Leiria. Attacked by the plague, she gave her three eldest children three swords with a message:
- To Edward, heir to the throne - "reign with justice".
- To Peter- "support the weak".
- To Henry - "protect the poor".
She died on July 19 1415, before the expedition to Ceuta.
She is buried in the same tomb as king John I, in the Founder's Chapel of the Monastery of Batalha, the first Royal Pantheon in Portugal.
